Meet My Best Friend, Shelby!

Have you ever had a friendship crush on someone? Like... You see them from afar and you're like "Wow, I'd really love to be their friend!", but you'd have no idea how to even start your introduction?

Well, that was me with Shelb!

She is the worship leader at our large congregation, has the voice of an actual angel, and Jesus radiated from her. I thought that she was way too cool to ever be friends with me.

But Shelb ran up to me the first time I was there. Hugged me. Introduced herself to me. We talked about Christ ... A lot. And that was it. We clicked. Our bond began from a mutual passion for Jesus and from our shared enneagram! We are both fours!

As I've gotten to know her deeply in the last three years, I can honestly say that she is one of my closest friends, most trusted mentors, and biggest cheerleader in my corner. And I really just want to show you all just how great she is too, so I sent her a few questions to ask her so you can get to know her! Guys- Her wisdom and fire for God is so evident and awesome!!!! She's the big sister everybody needs!

Tell us about yourself:

I'm from Oak Ridge, Tennessee. I'm a worship leader, a wife of a pastor (we've been married almost 11 years), and a mom of three little ones! (7, 5.5, 3)

What scripture are you most passionate about and why?

Psalm 91... it literally held me together during a season when I battled severe panic attacks. I had to say it out loud at night to remind me of the truth

Advice you'd give your 20 year old self?

Being popular and pretty isn't everything. In fact, that can be a really exhausting way to live. Find the people who love you and speak life into you and let them be “your people”... you don’t have to be besties with everyone!!!!

How do you define beauty?

(such a good question!!!!) Honestly, I would say that this has been a struggle for me in life, but beauty to me is being comfortable in your own skin, not feeling like you have to look like someone else (or keep up). I choose to continue seeing myself as radiant in Christ whether I'm in my mama sweats or all prettied up for a wedding... For me, beauty is choosing to believe that God made no mistake when He made us the way He did. I'm on a journey to embrace that!

Favorite Bible verse and why?

Romans 10:11!!!! For sure. Because when we believe in Christ, shame can’t win anymore!

One specific way God continues to show up in your life?

He continually puts people in my life who love me as I am and who speak life (encouragement) into me. And it’s often when I need it most but am least expecting it! God knows my heart so well.

Best compliment you've ever received?

Someone once told me that I redefined their definition of beauty forever. And as someone who has struggled in the past to believe I’m beautiful, I took this compliment as a sign that God is showing up in my life and helping me point others to Him.

What do you think we need more of in this world?

We need more understanding between women. We are all wired so differently, and I think that’s a picture of the body of Christ. We need to listen to understand each other, as opposed to trying to force others to think how we do from the get-go. Grace and space to be oneself as God created us to be is the goal. We all have one mission in mind: To share His message in our own creative way and to cheer one another on along the way!

What do you want to be remembered by?

I want to be remembered for being encouraging and for cheering people on... I want everyone to know that their gifts matter and make a difference.

Top 3 favorite books and why?

1. Uninvited by Lysa T

2. Hinds Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard

3. Wonder by RJ Palacio

What made you fall in love with your husband?

His singing voice, his fun adventurous side, the way he laughs at himself... But the way he pursues me and notices the little things is awesome. (We are not perfect, trust me- but we are best friends!!!)

How do you keep Jesus at the center of your marriage?

We stay very honest with each other (sometimes that can be painful- it’s like a mirror into the inner struggle stuff). We try to pray together regularly, even if it’s spontaneous moments through the day, we seek to point each other to Jesus whether we are struggling or feeling put-together
